Size: 15-17 cm (similar to a large sparrow). Description: Mottled gray all over with patches of rust; has short ear tufts. The only small owl with dark eyes. Range: Southern interior of British Columbia Habitat: Pine forests, especially at higher elevations. Nest: Abandoned woodpecker holes, especially those of Flickers. Voice: Soft, low pitched "boop", usually only late at night. Diet: Insects. Behaviour: Strictly nocturnal. Notes: Well camouflaged and rarely seen. Young are already independent at five weeks of age. Migrate to Central America for the winter. Population status vulnerable due to habitat loss. |
